- 1 cup water or 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup milk
- 1/2 cup large flake rolled oats
- 1 1/2 teaspoons brown sugar, plus more if desired
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
- Bring water or a water and milk mix to a boil in a small saucepan over medium-high heat.
- Stir in rolled oats, cinnamon, brown sugar, and salt. Reduce heat to medium-low.
- Let the mixture simmer, stirring occasionally, until the oats are tender and the texture thickens to your liking, about 5 minutes.
- Take the pan off the heat, cover with a lid, and let it sit for 2 minutes to absorb any remaining liquid.
- Spoon into a bowl, add any extra toppings or sweeteners you like, and enjoy.
- For microwave method: Combine all ingredients in a large microwave-safe bowl. Heat on high for 1 minute and 30 seconds. Stir and heat for another 45 seconds.
- Let the oatmeal rest for 1 minute, stir again, and serve warm.
Notes
- Use certified gluten-free oats if needed.
- Dark brown sugar gives a deeper flavor, but light brown or other sweeteners work too.
- Steel-cut oats can be used by substituting 1/4 cup and cooking for 20–25 minutes.
- Quick oats can replace rolled oats; use 1/2 cup oats and 3/4 cup water. Cook for 3–4 minutes.
- Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 4 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
- Reheat with a splash of milk or water to loosen the texture.
